I like to believe there's vanity in pain. There's a certain artistry in the depressed, suicidal, alcoholic images portrayed on the movie screens. The pained, tortured victim overdosing on pills has become our generation's hero. Happy just doesnt feature anymore. Even the cartoon Happy Tree Friends proves to be a stark contradiction to what its title promises; bloody images of violence and gore as a result of some cute squirrels decapitation at the hands of its equally cherub-like friend. This is supposed to make us 'Happy'. Trivalising death, satirizing pain.It is no wonder we are so bloody fucked up, and we relish in this. Fucked up= Misunderstood= It's normal, pop me another prozac babe. Being 'happy' is a priviledge that no amount of pills or counseling can ever promise. So you pop those pills, talk your life away to people who will never understand, do you honestly believe you are happy when you leave their cold, cash-milking offices? When you wake up from your proazac induced sleep can you say you're content? We felt happy as kids, so why are we paying so much, losing so much, to recreate something that was never induced by medication in the first place? Back-tracking, as kids we never enjoyed the freedom that being older, we now have access to. Alcohol, nicotine, clubbing, making out, pills. Have we, as older teens, traded physical restriction and innocence for physical freedom and emotional confinement. Noone ever said being happy was easy. In fact the colloquial phrase 'Be Happy' has assumed a distinct sarcastic and ironic tone now that we're tainted with age and experience. However neither is Happiness impossible. In the mass confusion of the media and the seeming futility of our consumerist driven lives, we sometimes forget that happiness is right here. Even it is just for a few seconds that you catch yourself feeling content and relaxed, just think, you've got it. |
